What is working time?

Working time is a key concept in labor law, defining the number of hours an employee must work in a given settlement period. It directly impacts work organization, remuneration, and the proper settlement of working time.

According to the regulations, the Labor Code specifies that an employee’s working time is determined based on applicable working time standards, the length of the settlement period, and the number of working days. This means that working time is not a fixed value and may vary depending on the calendar and the number of days off.

How are working hours determined?

The calculation of working hours is based on the applicable standard working hours, which for full-time employment is generally 8 hours per day and an average of 40 hours per week in a five-day workweek. This weekly working hours form the basis for further calculations.

To calculate working hours, the following factors must be taken into account:

  • the number of working days,
  • days off resulting from an average five-day workweek,
  • public holidays falling on working days,
  • the applicable settlement period.

Correct calculation of working time allows you to determine the total number of hours to be worked in a given period.
